The first World Cancer Day was observed on 4th February 2000, following the proposal of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) during the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The day is set aside to raise awareness of cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment to fight against cancer.
To commemorate this day, Sankalpa Cancer Foundation organised a "Walkathon," wherein Shreehitha Jyothi K of Std 4 participated and received a medal of appreciation.
